One Piece first mentioned the God Valley Incident in Chapter 957, released in September 2019, exactly six years ago. Just a mere mention of the incident took the fandom by storm, especially after they learned that many of the most powerful pirates, including Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom, were once part of the same crew led by Rocks D. Xebec. Rocks was so powerful that Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp had to form an alliance in order to defeat the legendary pirate. As usual, the Marines took all the credit for the incident while ignoring Roger’s contributions.
As a result, Garp received the title of Marine Hero, which earned him respect and fame across the world. However, the World Government often rewrites parts of history for its own convenience and hides the truth from low-ranking members as well as the general public. The ongoing Elbaf Arc reveals that the truth behind the God Valley Incident is nothing like what we know so far. While we have only gotten a glimpse of it, according to @pewpiece on X, the editor of One Piece has confirmed that the full truth behind the incident will now come to light. The information comes from a reliable source, even though it remains unofficial.
The Truth Behind the God Valley Incident Isn’t What We Were Told At All

The history mentioned in Chapter 957 made it seem as though Rocks was the root of all evil, when in reality, he had willingly stepped into the trap set by the World Government. The fact that higher-ups in the Marines not only support but also cover up the Celestial Dragons’ wrongdoings is no secret. Most of them wouldn’t so much as bat an eye at something as despicable as the Native Hunting Tournament, so rewriting the history of the God Valley Incident to suit their narrative is something they can easily do.
The reason the Roger Pirates and the Rocks Pirates were there was because the World Government had kidnapped Shakuyaku (Shakky) and planned to offer her as a prize to the winner. The Holy Knights would have loved to keep a beautiful slave like her, and her presence only lifted their spirits. While Rocks did intend to save Shakuyaku, his true motive was to rescue his wife and two-year-old son, who were hiding in God Valley, his homeland.
Rocks believed his family would be safe on an island outside the World Government’s jurisdiction. However, he never imagined they would discover his secret and use it to lure him there by staging the Native Hunting Competition. The ongoing backstory in the Elbaf Arc was meant to explain the reason behind Harald’s death, so it’s a pleasant surprise that Rocks was unexpectedly introduced. While Kuma’s backstory only offered a glimpse of God Valley’s horrors, the latest arc will reveal everything about the incident that changed the world.
