The German City of Nördlingen, which may have been the template for Shiganshina from »Attack on Titan«, is a popular tourist destination, but the countless visitors keep causing problems. We summarize.

Unrest and vandalism

The city of Nördlingen in Bayerisch-Schwaben is undoubtedly an inspiration for the successful »Attack on Titan« manga, although creator Hajime Isayama has never officially confirmed this. However, German culture in Japan is known to be very popular and there are also numerous influences in the series, such as the names.

Many fans almost visit the possibly original locations every day and ensure that the residents are amazed or even residents with their behavior and colorful cosplays – especially due to vandalism.

The historic city wall, which surrounds all of Northern and therefore reminds so much of “Attack on Titan”, as well as some other buildings have already been smeared into the series with graffiti from quotes and characters.

The 350 stages of the approximately 90 meter high church tower “Daniel”, another landmark of the city, are also drawn accordingly – and only at the end of these stairs is a book in which doodles are officially allowed.

While some local traders undoubtedly benefit from the many fans, the tranquil calm that the historic city once distinguished has now given way to a constant tourist activity in many areas.

Therefore our appeal: Nördlingen is not just the potential backdrop of a fictional story. It is primarily a city with a deeply rooted and fascinating history that deserves respect and appreciation.
