It’s a harsh world for the Black Swordsman in the brutal world of Berserkbut said brutality has continued past the tragic passing of series creator Kentaro Miura. For around a year, many believed that the manga would never return following Miura’s death, though Kentaro’s friends had different plans. To honor their friend, writer Kouji Mori and the artists at Studio Gaga decided to continue pushing Guts’ story forward, creating new chapters for the Band of the Hawk. With the release of the latest manga volume, Mori has revealed Miura’s thoughts on the latest arc and why Guts’ “despair” is necessary.
The latest Berserk volume has arrived in Japan, and here’s the statement Kouji Mori has shared as a part of the compi;ation, “Thank you again, dear readers, for picking up this new issue. We are trying our best to tell you the story that Miura told us, but I know it is impossible to do so as long as he is not here… so I thought I would add a few words about what he told me and what his intentions were for the chapter *(chapter means current arc) in this postscript.”
Kouji then revealed what his good friend Kentaro Miura had to say about the current storyline, as the series creator had detailed the future of the series to Mori before his passing, “When Miura spoke of this chapter, he repeatedly said, ‘Guts is in despair. He has lost everything.” Since ‘that day’… Guts has risked everything in his desperate journey just to strike a blow at Griffith. Guts’ sword cut through the air without being able to fight or even touch him. Also, his life, in which Guts had risked everything, came crashing down in this moment. As Guts himself said, the sword is everything to him. Thus, he could not feel anger, sadness, or even hatred… he was in a state of emptiness. “This despair is something absolutely necessary for Guts,” Miura said. In the next volume, we will enter episode(s) which Miura also found troubling. The chapter is to be difficult, but we at Studio Gaga will give it our all! Thank you very much for your support.”

So what is currently transpiring for the Black Swordman in Berserk’s manga? Following the destruction of Elfhelm, Guts and company find themselves occupying the Eastern nation known as Kushan, which had previously been their enemy. Now that Griffith has become a big enough threat to bring the two parties together, Guts and company might have found allies that can help them defeat Falconia. Unfortunately, the manga protagonist has more worries on his hands.
Thanks to Kushan’s higher-ups seeing the brand on Guts’ neck, they consider him a threat and have sent for him to be exiled. Taking him to a mysterious cave, it seems that Guts is going to need to snap out of his current funk pretty soon if he wants to live through the experience. Luckily, the next chapter of Berserk arrives in Japan later this week, so we might see if the Black Swordsman can survive the experience within its pages.
