According to Greek mythology, Apollo represents the principles of form, light, and individualization, while Dionysus embodies chaos, instinct, and ecstasy. But how does this relate to Kpop? Kpopping shares in the video that these two divine forces manifest in every aspect of Kpop, from the rigorous training systems of idol groups to the dynamic energy of fan chants.
One of the most compelling aspects of the video is the analysis of BTS’s music and message, particularly their song “Dionysus.” BTS drew parallels to the Greek god Dionysus as a metaphor for their journey to stardom. Dionysus was viewed as an outcast because he was the only Olympian born to a mortal mother, and his rejection by the other gods prompted him to create his own devoted following. In a similar way, BTS debuted outside Kpop’s “Big 3” companies and faced the label of being ‘outcasts’ in the industry, yet they have ultimately cultivated a significant fanbase of their own. Dionysus, also known as the Greek god of wine and harvest, is also reflected in the concept photos for the group’s album “Map of the Soul: Persona.”
