In Kpop, one measure of an idol group’s popularity is based on their streaming stats. Fans tirelessly stream their favorite artists’ songs and religiously monitor the numbers and charts. Among the various music platforms used by fans, Spotify stands out as a global favorite, which shows the total streams for tracks, albums, and artists.

To ensure fairness and authenticity, Spotify has implemented measures to protect artists from “fraud” or “artificial” streams. According to their official website, an artificial stream is a stream that doesn’t reflect genuine user listening intent, including any instance of attempting to manipulate Spotify using automated processes (e.g., bots or scripts). With this, Spotify regularly conducts mass removals of streams to maintain the integrity of its platform.

While Spotify means well with its efforts against streaming inflation, Kpop idols whose streams were affected often receive flak because of it. Many artists, including BLACKPINK and BTS members, have had their streams removed after Spotify’s system detected them as ‘fraudulent.’

In Spotify’s recent sweep, solo songs of BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Rosé reportedly lost around 2 million streams. BTS members Jungkook, V, Jin, and Jimin weren’t exempt from the sweep, either. Jin’s recent release, ‘Don’t Say You Love Me,’ allegedly lost over 15 million streams. V’s ‘Winter Ahead’ had 13 million streams deleted, and Jungkook’s ‘Seven’ and ‘3D’ also lost millions of streams. Jimin, however, suffered the most among all the Kpop idols mentioned—his 2024 released track ‘Who’ lost over 15 million streams despite landing headlines for topping charts worldwide. ‘Who’ has consistently been subject to stream removal since its release. Fans pointed out that 90 million streams were previously swept, and Spotify has now deleted over 200 million streams in total.

Whenever news of stream sweeps hits the headlines, the affected idols and their fans are often criticized for allegedly manipulating the numbers, which undermines the hard work of those who actually streamed. The removal of streams has long sparked controversy among Kpop fans, with many calling for transparency in Spotify’s moderation process.
