On June 23rd, Korean news outlets reported that BTS member Suga made a generous donation of 5 billion KRW (approximately $3.62 million) to Severance Hospital in Seoul to support children with autism.

Officials at Severance Hospital announced plans to build an autism treatment center with the use of Suga’s donation. This facility will be named the “Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center,” which is taken from Suga’s real name. The new center is expected to open in September of this year and will focus on providing mental health care and therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Services will include language, psychological, and behavioral therapy, as well as various programs that combine clinical treatment with research for patients.

According to the hospital, Suga has been a long-time advocate for mental health, consistently donating to related causes. In a press release, hospital officials stated, Even while performing with BTS, he has donated to charities and shown a strong interest in helping young people with depression and behavioral issues. He has sought to find ways to use his music to make a positive difference.

In November 2024, Suga met with a child psychiatry expert at Severance Hospital, which eventually led to the creation of a program called “MIND” (Music, Interaction, Network, Diversity). This initiative uses music to help children with autism develop their social skills. Participants in the program engage in playing instruments, writing lyrics, singing, and expressing their emotions through music. Suga also volunteered on weekends, interacting with the children and assisting them with their activities especially when it comes to music.

Suga shared, I realized that music can be a powerful way to express feelings and communicate with the world. It made me happy to be part of the treatment process for children with autism. I will keep working so that more children can live as members of society.

With the news of Suga’s donation all over the Internet, many netizens shared their thoughts and the online responses were mixed. Some praised Suga for doing such a good deed, while some are questioning the intentions of the donation, mentioning the idol’s previous DUI controversy.

  • He should be praised for a job well done.
  • A donation is a donation, a criminal record is a criminal record
  • It’s a good deed that can make a real difference to those in need
  • This looks like a donation to get off criticism-free
  • This could give young fans the wrong impression that money can buy forgiveness
  • It’s true that you can tell his intentions but 5 billion isn’t small money
  • Still, 5 billion won isn’t an easy donation. No matter how much money you make, do you think that you can give away your own money like that?

Meanwhile, Suga recently completed his military service after 21 months as a social worker. With Suga’s discharge, all of the BTS members have now completed their military service.
