Canada banishes three manga titles from numerous schools

A current ministerial regulation banishes over 200 books, including three manga series, from the school libraries and classrooms from the Canadian province of Alberta. We summarize the details below.

Three manga affected

As early as July 2025, Demetrios Nicolaides, the Minister of Education of the Canadian Province of Alberta, issued a ministerial regulation (No. 030/2025), the school authorities to prevent students from kindergarten up to 12th grade, which contain the explicit and visual representations of sexual actions and to banish them from the schools.

However, since this ban also affected popular novels such as “The Handmaid’s Tale”, the regulation was updated again a few days ago and now only includes visual representations, but not written descriptions.

The Edmonten school authority then put together a lavish list of 226 books that will be under the ban and will have to be removed from school libraries in the future. Among them are the following manga volumes:

The Ministerial Ordinance is scheduled to come into force on January 6, 2026 and then applies to a total of over 800,000 pupils.
