While western blockbusters in Japan are increasingly losing relevance, another genus dominates the cinema business: anime. The industry magazine President Online analyzed this trend, which has been pending for several years.
Growing interest in anime
President Online’s report is primarily about Clint Eastwood’s latest film »Juror No. 2 «, who premiered worldwide at the beginning of the year-but did not ran in the cinema in Japan, but was only available through the video rental U-Next. A situation that may seem unusual – but is not unusual in Japan.
Even though the “Harry Potter” films still celebrated great success in the early 2000s, many other foreign live action films had been difficult for the Japanese box office. Even the blockbusters from the Marvel universe were by no means as successful as in other countries.
Instead, the interest of the cinema-goers continues to grow in anime films, which in particular is thanks to the many outstanding works of Studio Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai, but also the “Detective Conan” series. Japanese films would currently make an impressive 75.3 % of the cinema revenue in Japan.
Anime are box office strikers
This is also shown by the box office strikers, because there are seven Japanese and three foreign films among the top 10 most successful films ever in Japan – six of them are anime, which underlines their popularity as well as the significantly higher insecurity results compared to real films.
It was not surprising that the Japanese cinemas, which had recorded a decline in visitors of 25.9 % since the outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic in December 2019, would do everything to ensure their survival.
For this reason, the focus is currently on anime because they are simply more lucrative and the visitors could also be lured into the cinema by selling exclusive merchandise in a limited edition.
