After only three days, McDonald’s Japan had to end his youngest “Pokémon” collaboration prematurely-because resellers caused a scandal.

Finished after three days

On August 8, 2025, McDonald’s Japan started a collaboration with “Pokémon”, in which each “Happy Meal” order was included in one of nine figures and two limited collection cards.

Although you pointed out to order just as much as you can actually eat and not to use the menus intended for children for resale – but of course Scalper does not shy away. They acquired “Happy Meals” for 510 yen each (around 3 euros) and then offered the collective cards they contain on auction platforms at significantly higher prices.

The decisive factor for the decision to initiate a full sales stop on August 11, 2025 and thus after only three days was less this profit -oriented and unsolidaric procedure of some customers, but rather massive criticism about food waste.

Food thrown away in masses

After all, the resellers were of course not able to eat the tons of “Happy Meals”-and so there was an extremely frightening picture around the participating McDonald’s branches: the trash cans were full of fast food that was not even touched. McDonald’s was disappointed in a statement:

»In the clear contradiction to our philosophy, children and families who have always lived, such a situation is clear to enable a beautiful and entertaining eating experience. We take the incident very seriously and admit that our preparations were not sufficient. “
