The US publishing group Harpercollin’s publisher announced today that the German and French manga division of the streaming service Crunchyroll was acquired. We summarize.

Completion this year

By taking over the manga business of Crunchyroll, Harpercollins, the second largest public book publisher in the world with branches in 15 countries, is for the first time in the German and French manga market.

The end of the transaction is planned for the second half of 2025 and is still subject to approval by the responsible supervisory authorities. The financial details were not published.

After approval, the manga teams in Germany and France are to work under the direction of Hideki Iyama-Dessigne, who reports directly to Chantal Restivo-Alessi, CEO for International Foreign Language Publishing at Harpercollins. The operational implementation is accompanied by the HarperCollins state societies.

Brian Murray, CEO of Harpercollin’s publishers, commented on the announcement as follows: »We are very happy to expand our manga portfolio in Europe and thus build on our already successful Japanese business. As the only large western publisher that works in Japan, this takeover strengthens our know-how and our skills in this rapidly growing genre. This is a significant step to expand our manga program around the world. “

Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, added: “I would like to thank the employees of the manga division of Crunchyroll in France and Germany, whose new home will enable them to continue to convey the joy of manga in these markets at Harpercollins.”

Crunchyroll has been active on the German manga market since the takeover of the Kazé Manga Manga Manga Label Manga in 2019. Almost two years later, in August 2021, Crunchyroll himself was bought by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
