Abel Góngora, co-director of the second season of “Dan da Dan”, said a few days ago how demanding the anime implementation of the successful manga series is. We summarize below.
Detailreicher Manga
In a few weeks, the long-awaited second season of “Dan Da Dan” celebrates its premiere on Japanese television, which is why Abel Góngora, who, alongside Fuuga Yamashiro, took the opportunity to comment on the difficulties of adaptation in an interview with CBR.
According to Góngora, the biggest challenge is to bring the exceptionally high level of Yukinobu Tatzus manga series to life in the anime, which has already sweated the animators a lot.
Because the Studio Science Saru is otherwise known for reduced, stylized character designs, “Dan da Dan” means an unusual change of direction. “Usually we make the characters strong, that is our style”said Góngora. “But in this project we try to go in the opposite direction.”
Nevertheless, you make sure to keep certain elements, such as shades, as simple as possible in order not to overload the animation.
Creative changes
Despite the close orientation on the template, one occasionally allowed smaller deviations – always in the sense of the staging. In the scene, for example, in which Okarun in the fight against Jiji not only counts once, but three times to 20.
This change was a conscious decision by the episode director in order to make the scene more impressive and to emphasize Okarun’s determination.
In addition to the dramaturgical effect, a practical aspect also plays a role: “We have to fill the episodes – we need a lot of action because the story itself is not so complicated”according to Góngora. Since a typical episode has around 20 to 22 minutes of term, creative extensions like this are very welcome.
The broadcast of the second season begins on July 3, 2025 on Japanese television. ADN, Crunchyroll and Netflix show the sequel to the Simulcast.
