Naomichi iizuka, the director of the AI generated anime special “Twins Hinahima”, recently spoke out very positively for the new technology despite the strong criticism of his work. We summarize.
AI for optimization
The announcement of »Twins Hatahima« was the first, almost completely AI-generated anime in the anime community triggered great outrage, which is reflected in the very low rating of 5.24 out of 10 points on Myanimelist.
As part of the Niigata Animation Festival 2025, which took place a few weeks ago, the responsible director Naomichi IIzuka used the title “The Future of Ai-Drive Expression” during a symposium to clarify his opinion on the role of artificial intelligence in the anime industry.
He explained that AI would not take the jobs away from the animators, but would serve as a tool to optimize processes and to reduce costs. In the case of “Twins Hinahima”, about 95 % of the animations of artificial intelligence would have been created, which could have concentrated on the really creative tasks, such as directorial work.
However, AI would also enable the implementation of previously creative ideas, for example the animation of mana original drawings, in which the subtle details and the unique style of the mangaka are preserved. According to IIZUKA, this AI application was one of the success factors for “The First Slam Dunk”.
Despite his general optimism regarding AI in the anime future, IIZUKA would feel a certain concern that the creative author is missing behind the technology-a view that he probably shares with many anime fans.
