In an interview, director Atsuko Ishizuka spoke that with the anime implementation of “No Game No Life” she deliberately violated the usual design rules of anime. We summarize.
Established rules broken
Usually, anime studios stick to defined standards for design, coloring and the general look of a series. At “No Game No Life”, however, director Atsuko Ishizuka made a completely new way:
“Since it was a light novel, I already had illustrations that I could work with. I thought it was really nice and tried to reproduce the color pattern. In the beginning there was a lot of resistance from the coloring department.
It was difficult to balance my color scheme. I just thought: ‘It looks nice, so we keep going’ – and then I broke all the rules. ”
Ishizuka confessed that she prepared many headache to her employees, but in particular because of her background as an illustrator with a degree at an art college, she simply did not have the same view as other creators and therefore ignored the systematized anime color schemes.
Own style as a director
In search of her own style as an anime director, the incredibly lively and rich colors as well as unusual shades and lines were created, as is best known from »No Game No Life«.
For example, “The Pet Girl of Sakurasou”, which was published just two years earlier, could be seen as a test run for Ishizuka’s later style, because even if the graphic was rather traditional, a significantly lighter color palette was used.
In 2017, “A Place Further Than The Universe” appeared, which is also characterized by a pronounced choice of colors and special shades.
In any case, the fans may have liked it very much, because “No Game No Life”, “The Pet Girl of Sakurasou” and “A Place Further Than The Universe” are all very well rated on the Myanimelist rating platform (over 8 out of 10 points).
But now we want to know your opinion. What do you think of the graphic staging of the titles mentioned? Write it to us in the comments!
