Federal Office: More people affected by cyber attacks

Bonn (dpa) – Consumers in Germany are more and more often affected by cyber attacks and IT security incidents – even without having been directly attacked.

This emerges from the second “Report on Digital Consumer Protection” presented by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Cyber attacks, for example on local government, hospitals or companies, sometimes have a significant impact on many people, the authority reported.

Federal Office: Manufacturers and suppliers have an obligation

BSI President Arne Schönbohm spoke of a “dynamic risk situation” for consumers. Above all, manufacturers and providers of digital offers have an obligation: “Administrative bodies, companies and other institutions must meet their responsibilities. They must ensure that the personal or customer data entrusted to them cannot be lost or misused.” It is also in their own interest to ensure that their digital services are secure and that products are available without restrictions. Schönbohm advised consumers to pay particular attention to information security when selecting service providers and products.
