The French animator David Encinas remembered in a recent interview of his time in Japan at Studio Ghibli. We summarize.

Incredible experience

In 1997, the French animator David Encinas experienced a formative phase in his life: During the emergence of “Princess Mononoke” he worked directly in Studio Ghibli and worked on side by side with the two legendary filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

In the interview with Vulture, Encinas, who had previously participated in larger projects such as “Goofy: The Movie” and, according to his own statement, was one of the first western animators near Ghibli, about the intensive, exciting and turbulent experiences during his time in the renowned anime smithy.

Despite his experience, like everyone else, he had to start only to draw hands with no time and spend the whole day. Exercises with jumping balls would also have been one of the everyday tasks – something that he was very grateful afterwards.

In less than three months at Studio Ghibli, he learned more than in all the years before at Disney and Gobelins, a leading French animation school. In addition, he was involved in the production of one of the most successful Japanese anime films and was able to experience Hayao Miyazaki up close in action.
