Freiren: Beyond Journey’s End had quite the showing in its first season, with Studio Madhouse introducing the titular character and her quest to understand mortality in the face of her own immortality. Following the first season finale, Madhouse wasted little time in confirming that a second season was in the works. With the next anime season set to arrive in January of next year, 2026, the production house has shared a new look at what is to come for Frieren and her allies. While the new preview once again highlights the anime’s future, it seems that season two will be diving further into the franchise’s past.

One of the biggest appeals of Freeze: beyond journey’s end isn’t just its stellar animation and great character work, but its ability to tackle some lofty ideas when it comes to the question of mortality. Despite the protagonist managing to defeat the demon lord in episode one, her journey to understand the world she inhabits is one of the most compelling parts of the series. Luckily, while Frieren journeys into the future, her past is also something well worth exploring, and the new character visuals once again highlight characters that helped her in her quest to understand humanity. You can see the new preview below.

Alongside the upcoming second season of the anime, Freeze: beyond journey’s end is releasing a string of movies in Japan to celebrate its first season. While said films might not include new footage or a new story for Frieren herself, it goes to show how successful the franchise has been that compilation movies would score big at the box office. On the manga side of the aisle, a new anthology series is set to arrive in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End -Prelude-. While this spin-off hasn’t been confirmed for an anime adaptation of its own, it’s entirely possible that these adventures might come to the small screen. Even though season two has yet to have a specific release date, the anime’s comeback is sure to be one of the biggest events in the medium for 2026.

Luckily, you still have several months to catch up on Frieren’s story if you have yet watch all the first season’s episodes. Crunchyroll is currently the exclusive platform to check out the anime adaptation and here’s how the platform describes the series, “After the party of heroes defeated the Demon King, they restored peace to the land and returned to lives of solitude. Generations pass, and the elven mage Frieren comes face to face with humanity’s mortality. She takes on a new apprentice and promises to fulfill old friends’ dying wishes. Can an elven mind make peace with the nature of life and death? Frieren embarks on her quest to find out.”
