Futurama has returned to Hulu with a brand new season of episodes, and one of the executive producers behind it all has shared their hopes for even more seasons and a new movie potentially coming down the pipeline. Futurama is no stranger to beginnings and endings, nor is it any stranger to releasing in multiple formats. Throughout the past couple of decades, Futurama has gone from being a broadcast television show, to a series of direct to home video feature films, and now to its current streaming era. But there could be even more that the franchise is perfectly suited for as it heads into the future.
Futurama Season 13 has hit Hulu, and ComicBook got the chance to speak with long time executive producer behind the series Claudia Katz all about the new season. After revealing that she would love for the series to continue beyond its currently confirmed Season 14 order with the streaming service, the producer also shared her hopes to see the franchise head to the movies in the future as well noting that the franchise is perfect for the big screen due to its overall scope.
Futurama EP Shares Hopes for a Movie in the Future

“Absolutely. We’re there, we’re in,” Futurama executive producer Claudia Katz responded when asked about the interest to continue the series in the future. Upon reflecting on an earlier question the producer received in the day about a potential movie, Katz noted, “I do think because of the scope of Futurama, it is very well suited to features.” Explaining that, “It looks great on the big screen. I can officially tell you firsthand. It looks awesome on a big screen.” As for whether or not a Futurama movie is possible, Katz revealed, “I offer you that small glimmer of hope, and I hope it comes true someday.”
On reflecting on this new partnership with Hulu, Katz is happy with the current state of Futurama on a whole, “It’s like they say you can’t go home again, but to me, when we gear back up on Futuramait sort of is going home again because we’re so lucky to have a lot of the same writing staff, both Matt [Groening] and David [X. Cohen] and the same awesome cast. And so it really is sort of getting the band back together.” Katz even opened up about how working with Hulu has sparked a whole new kind of spirit for the show behind the scenes.
Futurama Enters a New Era With Hulu

“I think in this iteration with 20th and Hulu, we finally have partners who get the show and get us and are very supportive of what we’re doing and collaborative,” Katz stated. “So for me, this has been I think the most rewarding iteration in the fact that we feel a lot of support behind us. Which I think at Fox was, after we launched, we were just constantly being moved. It didn’t feel very supportive basically. So I think we’re all pretty thrilled to be in the situation we’re currently in.” And that could make for a bright future for the franchise overall.
Whether the future of Futurama takes shape in more seasons of the series or even a movie, there’s no franchise that is better fit to take on the different situations. It has evolved through all of these formats thus far, and would likely make for a massive jump to the big screen when or if it fully gets the chance. What do you think?
