Genndy Tartakovsky has delivered a bevy of classic projects over the course of his career, with a resume that includes projects like Samurai jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, Primaland his most recent Netflix project, Fixed. Unfortunately, there’s a project that Tartakovsky hasn’t been able to bring to the screen for the past several years, but now Tartakovsky has revealed a first look at that original animated film in hopes of getting it off the ground, though he needs your help to make it happen.
Tartakovsky pulled the curtain back on a new film titled The Black Knightsharing a first look at the new project on Instagram. In the caption, Tartakovsky reveals that The Black Knight has been in development for about 6 years, and the footage that is being shown was a down-and-dirty test made for the studio. Even with the test, the studio was still unsure if there was an audience, and so it has continued to sit.
Trying Something Different
After 6 years of being on the back burner, Tartakovsky is trying something different and going to the fans to build some excitement. In the post, Tartakovsky wrote, “Well, this might get me in trouble….But gotta try a new strategy. About 6 years ago we started development on a more adult animated action movie, The Black Knight. We developed it for a few years, the studio liked what we were doing but they were unsure if there is an audience that would go see it theatrically. We made a down and dirty test, and still no go. So to try something different I thought I would share the test to see if it can get a ground swell of excitement that would change the studio’s mind.
I won’t share the details of the story except for one element, our Knight Armor is 20 feet high and controlled by a knight inside using ropes, pulleys, and levers. The setting is around the 14th century. Anyways, I’ve already said too much.”
What Is The Black Knight?
While Tartakovsky didn’t go into too much detail, he did reveal that the Knight Armor seen in the footage is 20 feet high and is controlled by someone in the suit using ropes, pulleys, and levers. We don’t see who that is during the footage, but we do see a thrilling battle between the Knight and an elusive assassin or mercenary.
They use their speed to avoid the heavy attacks from the Knight, though they do get caught at one point and thrown into a tree. The Knight’s lumbering attacks can’t capitalize though, and the footage ends with the assassin hiding on the other side of the Knight’s broadsword.
The Black Knight already has a unique look and plenty of stylish action, and the description leaves a lot of room for intrigue as fans learn not only the identity of the person in the armor but also how they got the armor in the first place.
It’s not mentioned what studio this project is currently with, but hopefully this starts to move forward with someone, because it seems to have a ton of potential, and reactions in the comments are already immensely positive. Fingers crossed that the next post about The Black Knight we see is that it’s finally moving into production.
