Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has just crossed a major new milestone to become the biggest anime movie of all time. It’s been no secret that anime has become much bigger around the world in the last few years as a new generation of fans have been drawn to the medium for their preferred entertainment. It’s led to some big breakthroughs since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the past few years have seen some franchises really hit the mainstream in ways fans could not have ever predicted. And Demon Slayer has been the biggest recipient of those changes.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle kicked off the first film of a brand new trilogy for Koyoharu Gotoge’s manga arc of the same name, and it had broken all sorts of notable records with just its release in Japan earlier this Summer. But now that the film has made its way to the United States and other international territories, the film has officially become the biggest anime film of all time as it’s worldwide gross is now higher than anything that has ever been released before.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Now Highest-Grossing Anime Film of All Time

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle officially crossed over $555 million USD at the worldwide box office with the past weekend with a total of $451 million USD worldwide and $104 million USD domestically (with $36 million being added over the weekend). It was already doing very well in the United States as more fans have been flocking to the new film’s release since it made its debut, but this now cements the film’s place in film history. It’s become the highest-grossing anime film of all time as it beats out the previous record holder, which was Demon Slayer’s previous film, Mugen Train.

To put it in perspective, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle stands at the top with its current $555 million USD, followed by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in second place with its own $506 million USD, and with Your Name coming in third with $405 million USD. The film is still working its way through the rest of its theatrical run as well, so this number is bound to get even higher when its run is all said and done. It’s even more impressive considering that there are still two more films coming on the way.

What Does This Mean for Demon Slayer’s Future?

ufotable

Now that Demon Slayer has cemented itself in film history with its newest release, there are even higher boundaries to cross with the other two films in the Infinity Castle trilogy. It’s likely going to have even more pressure on the follow ups to somehow surpass this number, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not it can keep up that hot streak. Demon Slayer is the hottest anime property right now, but it might not be the same case when the final film in the trilogy releases.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has not revealed when the other two films will be releasing, but it needs to release on a steady pace in order to keep up this hot streak. If each of the films takes two years before they premiere, it means there’s a risk of interest in each of them cooling off. Especially as more anime are getting the spotlight than ever before thanks to how big anime has become on a whole.
