Jujutsu Kaisen Brutally Failed One Powerful Character & It Wasn’t Gojo

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga! Despite its explosive popularity, Gege Akutami’s Weekly Shonen Jump hit Jujutsu Kaisen has had its fair share of controversies, especially when it comes to handling character conclusions. Since the story is dark, it’s only natural to expect a few tragedies along the way, even if they’re disappointing to fans. Gojo’s death during the battle of the strongest created worldwide controversy because of several reasons, but it was mostly because many didn’t like the way it was handled. However, two years have passed since then, and the controversy died down long ago. While his death left many fans dissatisfied, the series made up for it with the thrilling Sukuna Raid, where a majority of the male characters fight against the main villain.

However, while Gojo’s death sparked so much outrage from fans, it wasn’t nearly as bad as how Jujutsu Kaisen handled Yuki Tsukumo. She was the only female Special Grade Sorcerer and had a lot more experience than Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. Yuki’s character was packed with potential and had the most intriguing dream in the series, but it all suddenly came to an end during her fight against Kenjaku. Even after that, she was left forgotten until the end, when her story could’ve been groundbreaking.

Yuki Could’ve Been Iconic, But She Didn’t Get the Spotlight She Deserved

Shonen series, especially action-driven shows like Jujutsu Kaisendon’t have as many powerful female characters as their male counterparts. This is why, whenever a character like Yuki shows up, she’s sure to grab everyone’s attention. She’s beautiful on top of being overwhelmingly powerful. Unlike Gojo, she didn’t bind herself to the Jujutsu society in hopes of changing it one day. Instead, she wanted something bigger and greater, and it was to eradicate the world of curses one day.

She traveled far and wide to learn why a majority of sorcerers are born in Japan. She arrived in Shibuya on the same day as the other sorcerers, but just like Yuta, she was late to stop the tragedy from happening. Nonetheless, Yuki sided with the remaining sorcerers and tried to find a way to free Gojo from the Prison Realm. In terms of powers, she had the most raw and unbeatable technique called the Star Rage. She can add virtual mass to herself and her Shikigami Garuda, but her ability is a lot more impressive than it sounds.

After all, she’s the only character who created such a destructive black hole during her fight with Kenjaku. Her fight had a lot of exciting buildup with Choso lending his support while the Special Grade stayed on the offensive. Unfortunately, her death happened all too quickly, and she left her final words to Choso, which was a brief emotional moment. However, since Jujutsu Kaisen mostly focuses on fights and plot development, these emotional moments don’t linger for long.

Yuki’s Wasted Potential Is Still Disappointing

The series didn’t waste any time in killing her shortly after she took action. She was briefly introduced a couple of times before, especially in Gojo’s Past Arc, when the show highlighted her goals and ideals. This is why her clash of ideologies against Kenjaku is one of the most memorable moments in the show. Yuki wanted humans to find a way to evolve beyond the curses or break the cycle completely. On the other hand, Kenjaku wanted to find all human possibilities by causing chaos and conflict, believing his actions would lead to a new golden age of Jujutsu.

Her philosophy added more depth to the story, and she actually wanted to do something meaningful. If not her, then someone else could’ve carried on her dreams to create a better future, but nothing like that happened. Not to mention that she was also a Star Plasma Vessel, a plot point that was only briefly touched on in the show and was left unanswered until the very end. Even in the latest Jujutsu Kaisen Modulocurses still linger in the shadows, causing mysterious disappearances across the nation. At the very least, we may be getting closer to learning the origins of Jujutsu sorcery.

It might have something to do with the Simurians, an alien race that discovered a small percentage of the Japanese population had the same powers as them. Although she died during the Culling Game Arc, there is still little known about her. The most disappointing fact was that despite having a considerable fan following, she wasn’t even included in the final color spread when the series concluded. While Gojo got a proper conclusion and farewell, Yuki remained one of the most famous examples of wasted character potential.
