Jujutsu Kaisen just dropped its exciting new sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and fans could not be more excited. Even just a single chapter in, there’s already a lot to unpack from Yuta and Maki’s romance finally becoming canon and coming to an end in the same breath, to the sequel introducing the concept of aliens seeking to coexist with jujutsu sorcerers. That said, all of the lore stuff aside, Modulo’s first chapter has also come bearing many fun little easter eggs, including sneaky references to not just Hunter x Hunter but also One Piece.
In Chapter 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulofans are introduced to Yuka and Tsurugi, Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren, and the essential protagonists of the sequel series. Joined by Maru, a simurian in disguise, the trio set out to investigate a series of child abductions in Kyoto. The chapter then goes on to introduce the culprit in question, who is seen playing video games with his newest victim, and in the bottom right corner is an open manga volume with a sneaky reference to not only One Piece but also Hunter x Huntertwo series that Jujutsu Kaisen’s creator, Gege Akutami, is especially fond of.
GEGE AUGE WITHOUT ATTEMS One Piece and Hunter x Hunter in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

The reference in question is a scene from One Piece’s first chapter that anyone would instantly recognize, even with little to no exposure to One Piece. The panels depict the central moment wherein Shanks entrusts his straw hat to Luffy after saving his life, with Gon funnily replacing Luffy in one panel.
If this were any other series, you could argue that the character in the panel could be anyone else with spiky hair, but Gege Akutami has been known to be a huge Hunter x Hunter fan for years, with countless such references scattered across Jujutsu Kaisen and the series itself drawing inspiration from Hunter x Hunter time and time again.

That said, the One Piece references don’t end there, as later in Chapter 1 of Modulo, fans get a glimpse of what Tsurugi’s training sessions are like when Yuka talks about how hardworking he is. Tsurugi’s training regime is also taken straight from One Piece, with him pictured swinging a stack of plates on one end of a barbell just as comically as Zoro. All in all, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is shaping up to be quite promising so far, both in terms of its plot and characters, which is why you should check it out as soon as possible.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is available to read on Manga Plus and Viz Media. Have you checked out Jujutsu Kaisen’s new sequel yet, and if so, what do you think of it so far? Tell us in the comments below!
