Just when fans thought the worst of it was over with the Shibuya Arc, Jujutsu Kaisen is paving the way for an epic return with Season 3 this winter, and it’s going to be just as brutal. From Yuji facing execution to Sukuna allegedly planning something involving Megumi, Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is going to be yet another rollercoaster of action and emotion. That said, the biggest, most tragic twist of the upcoming season actually has to do with the Zenin twins, and Jujutsu Kaisen’s new trailer just gave fans a glimpse of what to expect.

Besides announcing a release window for Season 3 and a special early premiere in theaters this fall, Jujutsu Kaisen also recently unleashed a new full-length trailer for the upcoming Culling Game Arc. That said, before the series can dive into the bloody and brutal Culling Game set up by Kenjaku, one fan-favorite character is expected to get a major power-up, and it isn’t the series’ protagonist, Yuji, but rather Maki Zenin. However, this power-up will come at a huge cost and a major sacrifice by Mai Zenin, which is ever-so-briefly teased in the new trailer, and by the looks of it, it’s going to be a very emotional one.

Jujutsu Kaisen Teases Mai’s Big Sacrifice in New Season 3 Trailer

Maki and Mai from Jujutsun Kaisen's Season 3 trailer.

In Jujutsu Kaisen’s new Season 3 trailer, fans briefly see Maki and Mai reunited, with the latter mysteriously telling Maki to “destroy everything.” This fleeting, split-second scene in the trailer is actually one of Mai’s most iconic lines and moments in the entire series, and sets the stage for her huge sacrifice for Maki’s sake. Without spoiling too much, Mai’s sacrifice is what enables Maki to finally unleash the true potential of her Heavenly Restriction, enabling her to become just as strong, if not even stronger than Toji Fushiguro.

Although Mai did not have the most likable introduction in the series, this part of Season 3 will no doubt change fans’ opinion of her, if not paint her in a much more sympathetic light. More importantly, this sacrifice and the explanation for it will dive into important lore surrounding twins in Jujutsu Kaisen that proves especially relevant towards the end of the series. All that said, most exciting of all, fans can expect Maki to deliver on this request by Mai to the fullest, with the massacre of the Zenin Clan sure to be the most satisfying and exciting battle to come in the next installment of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
