A recent episode of the popular Kpop survival show ‘Boys Planet II’ has sparked a heated debate among netizens after one of the judges, JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong, commented on a contestant’s weight.

During a feedback session with “BOY STORY,” a group from JYP Entertainment, Jaejoong suggested that one of their trainees should “lose some weight,” and he laughed while commenting. This clip immediately went viral online and sparked widespread criticism among Kpop fans. Many viewers took to social media to express their discomfort and disappointment with Jaejoong’s comment, accusing him of body-shaming the trainees.

In response to the intense backlash, Jaejoong clarified that his intentions were misunderstood. He held a Weverse live and also replied to a netizen’s comment on Instagram to explain the purpose of his feedback. According to him, it was meant to suggest minor adjustments to enhance the trainees’ stage presence, particularly their ‘dance lines,’ and was not intended to humiliate or body-shame them.

Jaejoong also emphasized that the broadcast clips were edited and did not reflect the proper context or tone of his comment. He also mentioned that he had spoken with the trainee in private, ensuring that his support for their growth and career was genuine.

The incident has sparked a debate among netizens, with some defending Jaejoong’s intentions and others criticizing his approach. Here are some comments from fans:

  • “It was realistic advice from a senior to his juniors. In that industry, appearance is extremely important.
  • I’m not a Jaejoong fan, but this is true, and this is real advice. If this makes you feel bad, just choose a different job and work somewhere else.”
  • “Openly criticizing someone’s appearance on a broadcast, and not even realizing it’s a problem because it’s a show about picking idols… No wonder people end up developing appearance-related issues.”
  • “Even if he has the right to say it, he could’ve said it after the show. Saying something like that in a place like that is just too much…”
  • “He’s being realistic, but this isn’t for broadcast… They should’ve edited that out.”
  • “I agree that his tone was a bit off, but I don’t understand overseas fans who are mad about his comment. In the name of fashion, don’t they use skinny models and celebrities, so isn’t it similar?

The trainee in question, Hanyu (Hanwi), later shared a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude to the show, the staff, and the fans. He posted a handwritten letter on BOY STORY’s official accounts. He said, “The challenge of BOYS PLANET II may have ended, but Hanwi’s story is just now turning to a brand-new chapter.” Despite the controversy, Hanwi focused on the positive experiences and growth he gained from participating in the show.
