STUTTGART (dpa-AFX) – Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann can live well with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s (SPD) power word on the continued operation of the three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany. “I have no problem with that,” said the Green politician on Tuesday in Stuttgart. “He must have thought something,” he said of Scholz. But Kretschmann also said that he would have found it better if Scholz had spoken his word of power before the Lower Saxony elections. “I didn’t think that was so brave.”

The remaining three German nuclear power plants should be able to continue operating until mid-April next year at the latest. Chancellor Scholz had decided on Monday and referred to his policy competence.

The Greens, on the other hand, only wanted to keep the two southern German nuclear power plants Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 in reserve until April 15 and continue to use them to generate electricity if necessary. The third remaining Emsland nuclear power plant in Lower Saxony, on the other hand, was to be finally shut down on January 1, 2023. This line was also confirmed by the Green Party Congress in Bonn. The delegates rejected the purchase of new fuel rods for longer operation.

“Now I don’t know what I should criticize about the fact that this power plant is also being stretched,” said Kretschmann. The Baden-Württemberg head of government does not see this as a gossip for the Greens. “The main concern of the party congress was that new nuclear waste is not created with new fuel rods,” he said. If three instead of two power plants go into stretching operation, it can be endured well. Scholz’s word of power, if you want to call it that, is in the “tolerable range”./poi/DP/men
