The legendary director behind Star Wars: Clone Wars almost had his own take on Superman that just didn’t work out as revealed in a recent update. Star Wars now has some of the biggest shows and movie projects now in the works with Disney, but there’s still one animated series that holds a special place in fans’ hearts after all this time. Samurai jack and Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky helmed an official 2D micro series produced by Lucasfilm that helped to fill in some of the gaps in between Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

The episodes were only a few minutes long, but offered a whole new take on Star Wars that still resonates all these years later. It turns out that Tarakovsky almost got to release an animated short all about Superman in the early 2020s that ultimately didn’t work out. When asked about whether or not there are plans to return to this short by Nexus Point News, Tartakovsky revealed that it was just a thing that lined up right in that moment but now he’s moved on to his original works.

“It was just a moment,” Tartakovsky stated about his previous Superman short project, “At the moment, I had time. I liked the idea we had to do it, and everything lined up right, and then everything changed, and then it was gone. So I’m much more interested in pursuing my own ideas right now than to do something that’s kind of IP.” While the creator isn’t entirely shooting the idea of taking on another property, Tartakovsky also has a lot more originals in various stages of development, Never say never, but right now I have another show in development, a movie in development…so trying to do originals is really what excites me.”

“Plus I’ve done Star WarsI feel like that’s the ultimate IP to do,” the creator concluded. Star Wars: Clone Wars was the de-facto take on this missing era of the franchise for many years until a CG animated series came along (and officially removed it from the wider canon), and it was a big deal considering that these 2D animated episodes were no longer than five minutes each. Making their debut with the Toonami block on Cartoon Network, you can check out the series in its entirety with Disney+ if you have never gotten to see it before.

What’s Next for Genndy Tartakovsky?

Netflix

While Tartakovsky might be moving away from taking on notable IPs for the moment, and is hesitant to revisit any of his older works, the creator has quite a lot of projects now in the works for a release in the near future. The third season of Primal is currently scheduled for a release sometime early next year with Adult Swim, but has yet to confirm a concrete release date as of this time. The director even just recently released the R-Rated film Fixed with Netflix this Summer too.

Adult Swim announced last year that Tartakovsky was also working on a brand new original series, Heist safari with the network but has yet to reveal any concrete updates since. That’s just a few balls he now has in the air, so it makes sense why he wouldn’t detour and take on someone else’s property at this time. Especially given that he has the rare opportunity to produce originals in an increasingly tough animation industry.
