The court sentenced a man in his 20s to a fine for breaking into the former dormitory of the Kpop girl group NewJeans.

On July 23rd, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced a 28-year-old man, whose surname is ‘Kim’, to a fine of 10 million KRW (approximately $7200) for charges of trespassing and theft. Previously, the prosecutors sought a 10-month prison sentence for the defendant.

The court explained the reason for the sentence by saying, The location of the crime was a dormitory where the celebrity no longer resides, so the risk of direct invasion of privacy was relatively low. ‘Kim’ admitted to the crime from the investigation and showed an attitude of remorse, and he was a first-time offender with no prior criminal record.

‘Kim’ appeared during the final hearing of the case on June 11th and admitted to all the facts of the indictment. In his final statement, he asked for leniency with the sentence and said, Please give me a chance to achieve my dream of becoming a civil servant. I will live well while taking care of my sick mother.

The defendant is accused of trespassing into NewJeans’ dorm in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on two separate occasions last year, while also stealing items such as hangers and placards, and even taking photos of the premises. The members had vacated the dorm in November of last year after notifying their agency, ADOR, that they were terminating their exclusive contracts.
