Popular manga scanlation website MangaDex has responded after it was forced to remove “approximately 7,000 titles” in select languages following a series of DMCA takedown requests on or around May 16, 2025. It addressed several questions within the community, such as how takedown requests are handled and how the process for disputing a takedown request on MangaDex works.

MangaDex also explained its affiliation with NamiComi, a fast-growing manga and comics submission platform, which “accepted to take management of the site and its domain; no transaction was performed.” MangaDex described its core team as small, which factored into why this FAQ took the time it did to be released.
It later said, “The recent shutdown of various aggregators has driven an accelerated growth of MangaDex. While we have historically received low volumes of takedown requests, that number has increased to such a degree that we can no longer handle it ourselves. NamiComi has the necessary legal framework to move forward and ensure the long-term sustainability of MangaDex.” MangaDex hit 68.8 million monthly visits in April (via Similarweb), up 31% from February’s 52.6 million.
MangaDex also explained its recent rule changes to clamp down on “excessive profiteering.” It’s worth noting that the popular webtoon and web novel site Reaper Scans recently shut down following a Cease & Desist from Kakao Entertainment. Reaper Scans had been criticized for paywalling infringing content.
