The Japanese company Media do Holdings recently announced that its shares in the Anime database website Myanimelist were sold to the AI specialist Gaudiy based in Tokyo. We summarize.
Myanimelist changes owners
Since its foundation in 2004, the English-language database website Myanimelist has changed hands several times. In 2019 it was taken over by Media Do Holdings, an e-book sales that wanted to expand the platform as a sales and marketing tool for e-books in overseas.
Now there is a new change at the top, because Media do Holdings sold its shares for a total of 531 million yen (around 3.3 million euros) to the web3 and AI company Gaudiy. Before the takeover, Media do Holdings had the majority of the shares in Myanimelist, while the manga publishers Kodansha, Shueisha and Shogakukan were minority shareholders since May 2021.
The exact distribution of the company shares after the takeover of Media do by Gaudiy is not yet publicly known.
The Gaudiy, founded in 2018, uses blockchain and generative AI to create so-called “fan nations”-online meeting points where fans can connect and express their fan base. One example would be “Gaudiy Fanlink”, whose partners Sony, Bandai Namco, Aniplex and Toho belong.
