According to the “Piracy Trends and Insights 2024” report by the analysis company Muso, the use of piracy websites continues to play an important role in global media consumption in 2024. We summarize.
Anime leads TV ranking
According to Muso, around 216.3 billion access to websites that offer protected content without a license were counted last year. With 96.8 billion visits, TV content such as series and live sport again cited the ranking-despite a decline of around 6.8 percent compared to the previous year.
Anime content is particularly popular. They made up around 27.8 percent of all TV-related access and are therefore in first place.
Muso interprets illegal streams and downloads in his study not only as a clear broken law, but also as a warning signal that indicates insufficiently served user needs. Fragmented offers, regional locks, delayed localizations and late publications are cited as reasons.
Nevertheless, the number of pirated copies has dropped in almost all areas – even with films, music and software. Only in the publishing sector there was an increase of 4.3 percent, with manga in more than 70 percent of the cases.
Most piracy access comes from the USA (12.3 %), followed by India (8.1 %) and Russia (7.1 %). Germany is in twelfth place with 2.35 %. Streaming (50.4 %) and downloads (49.6 %) are almost weighed.
