Anime producer Takafumi Nakame was skeptical in an interview with Anime News Network compared to the announced reforms of the Japanese government. We summarize the most important details.
Deeply rooted problems
In November 2024, the first eleven participants of the “Global Anime Challenge” were presented. The three-year program, financed by the Japanese cultural authority, is intended to promote young creatives in the anime industry so that they can develop innovative works and create new content for the steadily growing worldwide fan base.
However, the anime industry cannot be made an attractive career option by funding alone, emphasizes Takafumi Nakame, producer of Makoto Shinkais »Your Name«. First of all, the greatest challenges of industry would have to be solved before young talents could benefit in the long term:
»The anime industry has always been known for poor payment and long working hours. Despite small progress, the situation remains bad compared to other industries. Sustainable improvements are hardly foreseeable under the current structures because the problems are deeply anchored. «
The “Global Anime Challenge” invest in projects that would allow young animators to work more efficiently within the existing structures. However, Nakame said that new production paths and revenue models had to be created from which the creative could benefit.
Exploited exploitation cases are also increasingly come into focus through social media, which have further sharpened the awareness of the difficult working conditions. In response to this, the Japan Fair Trade Commission has set up an online form, through which animators can report violations and grievances directly.
