While all films from Ghibli are available on Netflix in Germany, you can only find a single work of the studio in North America, Japan and other regions – and now it was also revealed why. We summarize below.

The anime market is currently experiencing an enormous upswing. At Netflix, too, the global number of anime has tripled in recent years-even though the works of the renowned Studio Ghibli, one of the most successful and best known anime studios, are not included in the catalog in many countries.
According to Kaata Sakamoto, the Vice President of Netflix Japan’s content department, the company is well aware of the high demand for Ghibli films. Nevertheless, there have been no conversations or concrete offers so far – primarily to meet the studio with respect:
»The purchase of titles always depends on the right time and the right circumstances. It is important to us to understand the culture of Ghibli and to take into account the concept with which Netflix selects the titles.
Of course, we would like to make the Ghibli films accessible as many people as possible, but instead of an aggressive approach, we rely on a collaboration that is very natural. «
So it happens that among other things, US and Japanese Netflix users can find only one Ghibli film in the lush catalog of the VoD provider with “The last fireflies”-and according to the latest statements by Sakamoto, nothing will change.
