A financial report from IG Port, the parent company of WIT Studio and Production IG, shows: Netflix was the largest donor in the last financial year and contributed almost a quarter of total sales. We summarize.
TOHO in second place
Between June 2024 and May 2025, around 3.57 billion yen (around 20.6 million euros) flowed from Netflix to IG Port. This corresponds to around 24.5 percent of total sales. The streaming service paid more than its long-standing partner TOHO, which was the second largest donor with 1.05 billion yen (around 6.1 million euros).
Around 1.53 billion yen of the revenue generated by Netflix comes from licensing deals. These are fees for streaming rights, including for the third season of “Kimi ni Todoke,” which runs exclusively on Netflix.
In addition, Netflix invested around 2.04 billion yen in video productions. Unlike traditional television channels, the VoD service works directly with the studios and rarely takes part in joint productions.
As a rule, Netflix secures the global exclusive rights to publish an anime, while additional rights – for example for merchandising – usually remain with the producers. An exception, for example, is the series “Moonrise” produced by WIT Studio, for which Netflix owns all the copyrights.
