Netflix recently announced that “KPOP Demon Hunters” is the most viewed original animated film of all time on the platform. We summarize.

Before wild discussions break in the comments, we would like to clarify in advance: “KPOP Demon Hunters” is not an anime from Japan! Nevertheless, the film is extremely popular with anime fans because it is not too far from our beloved medium-and that is no coincidence.
Because as the directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans emphasized, the film production in the studio Sony Pictures animation was not only inspired by music videos, editorial photography and K dramas, but also by anime:
“We were very inspired by the faces and the look and feel of anime, but created a CG version of it.”
Apparently with success, because although the film was only released on June 20, 2025, Netflix chose him after only 37 days with 132.4 million (as of June 27, 2025) the most successful original animated film ever.
