Netflix‘s Squid Game is by far one of the most popular TV shows the streaming platform has released, and with the third season arriving near the end of June this year, the story of Seong Gi-Hun has seemingly come to an end. While the narrative of Squid Game reached a definitive conclusion, a scene in the finale suggests that the series may continue; however, the new events will be set in the US rather than Korea. The final scene confirms that the Squid Game event isn’t only confined to Korea but exists all over the world. The most intriguing outcome of this development is how the scene sets up the rumored English version of Squid Game set in the US.

Given that famous shows tend to continue even after their stories conclude, whether through spinoffs or other extensions, an American spinoff of Squid Gameconsidering its massive popularity in the US, comes as no surprise. This trend seems to have been picked up by another top Asian TV show on Netflix, Alice in Borderlanda live-action adaptation of the manga by Haro Aso, which also revolves around death games similar to Squid Game. Alice in Borderland released its season 3 on September 25th, and its ending included a scene similar to Squid Game’s finale, setting up a possible American spinoff.

The finale episode of Alice in Borderland season 3, after Arisu and Usagi return to the real world following their thrilling journey in the Borderland, features an intriguing scene. News reports of earthquakes occurring around the world, including Los Angeles, appear on television. The scene then shifts to a bar in LA, where a waitress is revealed to be named Alice. Though nothing is confirmed yet, it is evident that this is setting up a Borderland event in the US as well, confirming that the Borderland is not confined to Japan but exists worldwide. What makes the scene even more intriguing is the reveal of the waitress named “Alice,” teasing that the next installment might introduce a protagonist with that name.

It makes sense that Alice in Borderland may return with a new American spinoff rather than continuing Usagi and Arisu’s journey. Moreover, an American spinoff of Alice in Borderland seems more fitting than one for Squid Game. Squid Game’s authenticity lies in the Korean children’s games central to its story, and adapting them for an American version could diminish its charm.

By contrast, the concept of the Borderland, a world between life and death, is not bound to any single culture. Likewise, the death games in Alice in Borderland do not follow a fixed cultural pattern, meaning there is no issue with expanding the series globally. In fact, introducing a protagonist actually named “Alice” could make an American spinoff of Alice in Borderland even stronger. While Netflix has yet to confirm the future of the series, the positive reception of the latest season makes another installment very likely.
