The Kpop boy group SEVENTEEN is gearing up to celebrate their 10th debut anniversary on May 26th. To commemorate this special milestone, the group will release their highly anticipated fifth studio album, “HAPPY BURSTDAY.” However, the group’s comeback concept photos drew attention for allegedly being similar to another boy group’s previous concept.

On May 8th, SEVENTEEN dropped the third set of concept photos for ‘HAPPY BURSTDAY’ and amidst the excitement for the upcoming comeback, netizens pointed out alleged similarities between some members’ solo shots from VANNER’s concept photos from their third mini-album “BURN,” released in September of last year.

Netizens started comparing SEVENTEEN’s Wonwoo’s concept photo from VANNER’s Yeonggwang, specifically pointing out the same sleeveless shirt and similar accessories worn by the two. Some also commented that SEVENTEEN’s makeup and overall aesthetics for the concept were similar to VANNER’s, especially with the fire themes, slashed or scarred face look, chains and metals, and even nose bridge accessories.

Translation:
Wound makeup? OK.
Same outfit? OK.
Similar colors? OK.
Similar props? OK.
Rooftop? OK.
Tunnel? OK.
Fire? OK.
Similar composition? OK.
Split screen? OK.
Scar + costume + color + prop + rooftop + tunnel + fire + composition + split screen = ?

With this, SEVENTEEN’s fans (called CARATs) immediately came to the group’s defense and argued that the similarities between the photos are purely coincidental. Others have also noted that Kpop groups often experiment with similar themes and concepts, which are just reflections of the current trends in the industry. The controversy has sparked heated debates online, with some CARATs even calling out SEVENTEEN’s agency, HYBE, to address the issue.

  • let’s not pretend this style of bg concept pic isn’t incredibly generic. the only thing is two of them are wearing the same shirt but that happens a lot in the entertainment industry when you’re being dressed by stylists trying to stay on-trend.
  • It seems like a common concept though. But if the small company released theirs after, people would’ve made a freaking fuss
  • I honestly thought they were 1 team
  • it’s just hybe creating rumors about their groups so they get negative exposure
  • Since when did K-pop groups start owning fire concepts?
  • If your faves are from the recent gens—hate to break it to you, but 1st-3rd gen groups already did most of it first. Your faves didn’t pioneer everything.
  • Seventeen’s biggest anti = Pledis
