As part of an interview with Crunchyroll, the singer Takahiro Moriuchi spoke about his rather unusual career development. We summarize.
New beginning with anime
In 2005, singer and front man Takahiro Moriuchi founded the band One Ok Rock, which – as the name reveals – is committed to rock music together with Toru Yamashita (guitar), Ryota Kohama (bass) and Tomoya Kanki (drums).
After they only published conventional musical albums and singles in the first eight years, they dared a fresh start in 2013 by contributing the opening to the sci-fi-anime film “Harlock: Space Pirate”-and in particular achieved international reputation through this realignment.
In the following years, according to Moriuchi, contact with western rock fans in particular during the tours of the band led to an increasing grown interest in the medium of anime.
In the meantime, he describes himself as an enthusiastic anime fan and has already seen series such as “Demon Slayer”, “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Chainsaw Man”, “The Apothecary Diaries” and many classics. With his band, he also contributed the opening song to “Beyblade X” and the real film adaptation of “Rurouni Kenshin”.
In the end, Moriuchi expressed his great respect for international anime fans. He praised their high grasp because they were able to appreciate the media from a foreign culture and to grasp and understand everything despite linguistic barriers and the simultaneous reading of subtitles.
