Warning: This article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! Eiichiro Oda’s Weekly Shonen Jump hit, One Pieceis a lot deeper and nuanced than an average adventure story of a young pirate. Although the story starts with Luffy setting out on a quest to find the world’s greatest treasure, it slowly unravels the true state of the world and the forgotten past that’s affecting everyone to this day. Beneath its bright and beautiful exterior, One Piece hides a dark and horrifying side of the world that’s been suffering from all kinds of issues due to the World Government and the evil pirates. In a world full of corruption, tyranny, power struggles, slavery, and so on, Luffy emerges as a ray of hope to those in trouble.
During the 28 years since the manga’s debut, Luffy has saved countless people, including his crew members, allies, and even his foes. For such a person, no other power suits him more than Gear 5, the awakened form of his Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, a mythical Zoan that was removed from the annals of history. Gear 5 is more than just a simple power-up; it goes beyond almost all other Shonen transformations, further solidifying the fact that Luffy is one of a kind.
One Piece’s Anime Dropped the Best Gear 5 Episode So Far
The situation on Egghead continues to spiral down as more dangerous enemies keep appearing one by one. Saint Jaygarcia Saturn wasn’t even defeated when the rest of the Five Elders also showed up on the island and revealed their horrifying forms. Luffy has been constantly fighting villains one after the other, overusing his Gear 5 form, which severely depletes his stamina. However, he’s not one to give up on a fight, so he’s still standing against the villains.
Everything about the ordeal is incredibly serious, but that’s not going to stop the goofy Yonko from messing around. Luffy’s Toon Force has always been entertaining in the anime version, but nothing beats the exciting scenes from the latest Episode 1145. Due to the force of the attacks, his eyes, scars, and parts of his body or outfit pop out, leaving everyone shocked. However, Luffy picks them up one by one and attaches them back again, like it’s no big deal. The scene then shifts to him making a gigantic baseball bat from a nearby tree.
However, since the bat looks dull, Luffy creates a paint bucket and brush from thin air and colors them before hitting the Five Elders. These moments aren’t simply for entertainment purposes, but they also remind us how Luffy embodies a core theme of the story, which is to turn imagination into reality. Gear 5 is truly his peak when you realize that his only limitation is his imagination. As long as he believes he can achieve something on top of overcoming his stamina issues, no one in the world will be able to stop him.
What Makes Luffy’s Gear 5 Abilities Unique?
When you think about Shonen transformations, Dragon Ball first comes to mind, which revolutionized the Shonen genre and made this concept popular. Over the years, several shows, including Bleach, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, and many more, have all revealed their version of transformations, fueled by rage or the desire to protect someone close to them. While every Shonen transformation is special in its own way, Luffy does things a lot differently.
His transformation isn’t fueled by rage; instead, his desire to be the freest person in the world is what drives him to be stronger. Although his first transformation took him by surprise, Luffy adjusts his heartbeat to the rhythm of the Drums of Liberation to assume his Gear 5 form. Considering the true nature of his Devil Fruit as well as the fact that Luffy has been a source of hope to everyone he meets, no other power suits him better than Gear 5. Despite the darkness lurking in the world, One Piece holds on to its bright and cheerful nature.
Luffy’s whimsical comedy and his laughter help maintain the true nature of the show regardless of how many powerful opponents he has to fight. Nika, the Sun God, was a mythical Warrior of Liberation who fought for the sake of the slaves with a smile on his face. Luffy’s powers are also directly connected to Joy Boy, an influential figure during the Void Century. Although Luffy doesn’t like being called a hero, he has saved far too many people to be considered something else. Not to mention that the power itself represents many core themes of the show, including freedom, joy, and self-expression.
