It’s been well over six years since One-Punch Man concluded its second season in the Summer of 2019, and after years of endless waiting and countless delays, Season 3 is finally on the horizon. Given how Season 3 was initially announced in August 2022, fans have been looking forward to this third installment for quite some time, expecting the wait to be well worth it, especially as the series prepares to dive into one of its most exciting arcs.

That said, Season 3 of One-Punch Man has continued to find itself embroiled in one controversy after another. The latest example of this was the controversy surrounding the anime’s new Season 3 director, Shinpei Nagai, with the backlash being so intense that Nagai was inevitably forced to address the situation. Now, less than a week later, One-Punch Man’s anime may have a new controversy on its hands as the series’ director just shared that Season 3 may not live up to fans’ tall expectations after all, outright saying that it ” probably won’t live up to Season 1.”

One-Punch Man’s New Director Warns Season 3 May Not Live up to Expectations

In a recent post on X, Shinpei Nagai finally weighed in on whether Season 3 of One-Punch Man could live up to Season 1 as fans have hoped. However, Nagai’s response wasn’t all too reassuring, with the whole post reading:

“No, I have been prepared and understand the meaning of carrying the weight of a work that you all cherish so dearly. You may not like it, or it may anger you. But someone has to carry it. I am prepared and hopeful. It probably won’t be as good as Season 1. But the work embodies the passion and ingenuity of the creators. Please accept that. There are many companies nowadays that are funded by large corporations. Much of the talent has been drawn to those places. But, as I have said many times before, I want to support J.C. Staff, working to improve labor conditions and nurture its employees. Please stop with the harassment and the persistent questions that I can’t answer due to NDAs. I beg you, please.”

Given how beloved Season 1 of One-Punch Man is, it is understandable that fans want the upcoming Season to be just as good, especially after having to wait for so long. However, as Nagai claims, for now, all fans can do is trust that studio J.C. Staff is doing the best they can with the resources they do have at hand, as is the series’ new director, who is clearly pouring his soul into making the anime the best that it can be. It is still too early, and not to mention incredibly unfair to judge Season 3 just yet, and even if it doesn’t live up to Season 1, it’s still possible that the passion put into the new season will make its way to fans, making up for any of its flaws or shortcomings.
