As part of the Anime Expo 2025, the streaming service Netflix announced that the number of anime viewers had tripled in the past five years-and therefore one would like to further expand their global anime strategy.

Synchronous versions preferred

According to Netflix, around half of the global users now look at anime – this corresponds to more than 150 million households or around 300 million people. In 2024 alone, anime content was streamed over a billion times.

80 to 90 % of the spectators would prefer a setting in their language, which is why the streaming giant would also like to offer its anime titles in up to 33 languages in the future-but this does not meet with every fan.

Because the sometimes resulting temporal default in the publication causes great resentment, as is shown in “Kaoru and Rin”. The series is already broadcast in Japan, but is only available internationally from September 7, 2025 – but in numerous different language versions.

According to CEO Rahul Purini, users also prefer a synchronization in their mother tongue, according to CEO Rahul Purini. Although he did not give any concrete numbers, Great Britain leads with 48 % when looking with subtitles – the highest value worldwide. In all other countries, at least 52 % versions prefer.

Successful restart

Back to Netflix: The streaming service is also strongly positioned again in the summer season. Both the second part of “Sakamoto Days” and the restart “Summer in which Hikaru died” already made it into the global top 10 and once again underline the international popularity of anime.

In 2024, 33 anime series were able to secure a placement in the category of non-English language shows-more than twice as many as in 2021.

For the future, the provider has already announced some titles that should also be of great interest: in December 2025 the third season of “Record of Ragnarok”, the final of “Beastars” in the course of next year and the second “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” series.
