The American voice actor Aleks Le recently spoke critically about the topic of “celebrity casting in the dubbing industry” in an interview with the industry magazine TheWrap. We summarize.
“It’s frustrating”
When it comes to English-language dubbing of anime, 26-year-old Aleks Le can definitely be described as a heavyweight in the industry, after all, he lent his voice to popular characters such as Zenitsu (“Demon Slayer”), Sung Jin-Woo (“Solo Leveling”), Thorfinn (“Vinland Saga”) and Mikey (“Tokyo Revengers”).
Nevertheless, it has happened several times that he was excluded from a project at the last second because the role was instead given to a well-known personality, an influencer or even a singer:
»Social media followers are an important part of large productions these days. It’s frustrating when decisions are based on numbers rather than performance because it can compromise the best possible outcome for the project.
Personally, as an actor who truly appreciates and loves the art, I have nothing against celebrities or influencers or anyone who also appreciates the art. I can hear they put a lot of effort into it.
I have worked with many who are incredibly talented and really committed. But when the number of social media followers counts more than skill, that’s disappointing.”
In his opinion, social media and follower numbers should not be of decisive importance. Nevertheless, building a strong online presence has now become an inevitable part of his job.
He values the exchange with fans and looks forward to their messages, but also sees it as an additional task to stay in conversation with cast members.
