NAUEN/BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The Berlin SPD parliamentary group is campaigning for significantly more state influence on Berlin’s energy supply. “Since the heat and energy supply are basic needs of public interest, the Berlin heat supply as a whole also belongs in the public sector,” says the resolution that the SPD deputies passed at a parliamentary group meeting on Saturday in Nauen, Brandenburg. “That’s why we want to acquire a majority stake in the district heating supply and in Gasag through a stake in the state of Berlin.”
The district heating network has so far been operated by the Swedish energy company Vattenfall. The company supplies 1.3 million apartments in Berlin with hot water and heating. This is mainly generated with natural gas and coal. Vattenfall is considering selling the district heating business in the capital. Berlin’s district heating system is one of the largest in Western Europe. The Senate has been considering remunicipalisation for a long time. According to the ideas of the SPD MPs, the previous co-owners Engie (Engie (ex GDF Suez)) and Eon (EON SE) could stay on board at Gasag in Berlin.
In addition, the SPD parliamentary group called for the 29-euro monthly ticket, which was limited to the end of the year and valid in the Berlin city area, to be continued next year. At the beginning of 2023 there should be a nationwide public transport ticket for 49 euros as a successor to the 9-euro ticket that was valid in summer. For the period from October to December, the Berlin Senate had introduced a 29-euro ticket, which the SPD parliamentary group proposed should continue to be available without interruption. “On the one hand, we are relieving the burden on Berliners in a time of rising costs,” says the resolution. “At the same time, we are promoting the turnaround in traffic.”
The FDP chairman Sebastian Czaja criticized: “Using an energy crisis triggered by the Russian regime, a state aggressor, for demands for more nationalization is absurd.” The SPD should concentrate on organizing help for small and medium-sized companies “quickly and purposefully”. “At this time we no longer need state property, but the protection of private property and assets to secure jobs and livelihoods.”/rab/DP/men
