In an interview with Real Sound, Kenji Horikawa, founder of the anime studio Paowa, explained that original anime-anime without a manga or novel template-is currently in a problematic location. We summarize.

High risk for investors

According to Horikawa, the enormous number of new anime productions led to many creative people lost their enthusiasm for the development of independent original works. Specifically, he commented on this topic as follows:

»Nowadays it is actually a big challenge to realize new original works. The production costs for anime increase sharply, which means that unknown titles for investors pose a significantly greater risk – which is understandable.

At the same time, the mass of publications continues to grow, which means that when trying to keep up with this pace, you quickly reach your limits.

The urge to really create your own works seems to disappear more and more. Since every idea has to be developed from scratch at original anime, the effort is enormous. If this trend continues, we could soon forget how to produce an anime original work at all. «

Horikawa emphasized that Paworks would remain loyal to his previous path. The studio has already published numerous successful original anime in the past with titles like “Angel Beats!”, “Hanasaku Iroha”, “Charlotte” or “Shirobako”-and nothing should change in the future.
