Sugar Sugar Rune shojo manga is officially getting a new anime, with the announcement coming 20 years since the first anime started in July 2005. The news arrived from Studio Khara (Evangelion) during Japan Expo 2025, which is taking place through the weekend in France.

Sugar Sugar Rune (also stylized as Sugar² Rune) is a Japanese magical girl manga written and illustrated by Moyoco Anno. It was serialized in the Nakayoshi shojo magazine between September 2003 and May 2007. Kodansha compiled the story into eight volumes over the same period.

The series was later adapted into an anime by Studio Pierrot, which ran for 51 episodes on TV Tokyo from July 2, 2005, to June 24, 2006. Notably, Sugar Sugar Rune also received the 29th Kodansha Manga Award in the children’s manga category.
