It was recently announced through a product listing on the online retailer Amazon that Crunchyroll will soon be releasing the Ghibli film “The Last Fireflies” in a new Steelbook edition. Pre-ordering is already possible.

The new steelbook edition of “The Last Glowworms” is expected to go on sale on DVD and Blu-ray on November 21, 2025. This includes the film with German and Japanese language versions as well as video extras.
Studio Ghibli was responsible for the production of the 85-minute evening filler, which celebrated its premiere in Japan in April 1988, with Isao Takahata (“The Legend of Princess Kaguya”) taking over the position of director.
KAZÉ Anime (Crunchyroll) has released several different disc editions of “The Last Glowworms” in the past – most recently in September 2023 as a steelbook edition with a different cover design. The film is also available on demand on Netflix with its own German dubbing.
