The Japanese daily Sankei Shimbun recently reported on the arrest of a man who is accused of a violation of the Copyright Act in connection with the new »Demon Slayer« film. We summarize.
Random find after arrest
Just a few days after the Japanese cinema premiere, you could watch the first “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” film in full length and with subtitles in numerous languages on piracy websites and on social networks.
Consequently, the production committee in a resolute statement announced that any kind of copyright infringement will be pursued and punished with the exhaustion of all legal options – and now there was already the first arrest, which, however, came about by chance.
A 24-year-old man from South Korea was initially arrested for suspicion of theft and fraud, as he is said to have acquired around 200 anime blu rays worth 1.3 million yen (around 7,545 euros) with a stolen bank card.
When evaluating his cell phone, the police discovered a complete recording of the “Demon Slayer” film. The man denied the film to have recorded himself, but the further investigation showed that he had seen the film on July 18, 2025 in a cinema in Shinjuku – and the recordings came from there.
The sentence has not yet been determined, but should be considerably strictly than in the case of the other allegations for theft and fraud. In Germany, the first »Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle« film starts in the cinema on September 18, 2025.
