In an interview with Febres, anime producer Shinichiro Inoue spoke that the script of “The girl who jumped through time” was rejected several times during the planning. We summarize below.
Several attempts
The novel “The girl who jumped through time” (Japanese: “Toki o Kakeru Shojo”) by Yasutaka Tsutsui was published in 1967 and thus developed into a big hit in Japan long before the popular anime film implementation. The inquiries from the filmmakers to the author were correspondingly numerous.
The contract was finally given producer Shinichiro Inoue and director Mamoru Hosoda, who promised that their film would not adhere to the original history faithfully, but rather a kind of continuation that deals with the next generation.
According to Inoue, this project quickly turned out to be difficult. After all, there would have been three or four script drafts before Hosoda suddenly decided to reject everything and start over.
Strong difference
Hosoda then got support from screenwriter Satoko Ocudera, which ultimately had a significant difference from the original script – above all the characters.
The protagonist Makoto would have developed into a young woman from a girl who travels in the past to correct a mistake who takes a step into the future. And the role of the male protagonist Chiaki was also significantly expanded, which the action would have enriched according to Inoue.
As is well known, the end product is impressive, because although the film for its premiere in 2006 was only shown in a limited number of cinemas in Japan, he played a total of 300 million yen at the box office and was therefore an unexpected success. Even today, it is still one of the most popular anime films.
