Makoto Yukimiura’s Vinland Saga manga will officially end with the next chapter, Chapter 220, on July 25, marking the end of a 20-year serialization. Yukimura announced the news directly in an X post:

“Have all the fans already heard that there’s a break this month and that it’s the final chapter!? As expected…
Sorry for the late announcement: Vinland Saga will be taking a break this month, and the final chapter, Chapter 220, will be released next month on July 25th. There will be an official notice in this month’s issue of Monthly Afternoon.”

“Sorry, I couldn’t finish this month’s manuscript in time… Right now, I’m working on the final chapter. I truly apologize for taking breaks so often—but this will be the last break.
The final chapter is tough! For some reason, the artwork is taking a lot of time too! I’ll do my best!”

In a recent interview with Anime Corner, Yukimura discussed his creative process and the origins of the story. He also shared his thoughts on the iconic line, “I have no enemies,” and the message he hopes the series will convey, noting that there are only “a few more” chapters remaining.

Makoto Yukimura first started serialization of Vinland Saga in Weekly Shonen Magazine in April 2005, while it later transitioned to Monthly Afternoon. As of June 2024, the series has been compiled into 28 volumes.

The manga was adapted into an anime, with the first season airing in 2019 with WIT Studio behind the animation. The second season, which premiered in 2023, saw MAPPA take over the production with the same core staff, continuing the story for its less action-packed/more introspective tone focusing on Thorfinn’s character development. Both Crunchyroll and Netflix are streaming the anime.

The story follows Thorfinn, a young Viking warrior who initially seeks revenge against Askeladd, the man who killed his father. As he faces many battles and conflict while training and challenging Askeladd, Thorfinn eventually questions his purpose and the true meaning of being a warrior that his father had talked about. Along the way, he dreams of finding the peaceful land called Vinland that his father also spoke about, and he hopes to leave behind the violence of his past and build a better future.
