Why Avatar: The Last Airbender Fans Are So Divided on This Major Character

Since Avatar: The Last Airbender began, Katara has been a bit of a divisive figure. This mostly stems from her controlling nature and hypocritical actions. Katara is a flawed character, but a lot of fans see too many flaws to like her. Others appreciate that Katara is the way she is.
Her need to mother everyone feeds into her character arc with her mother’s death and wanting revenge. Katara’s actions also show that she’s not perfect, and she’s a human just like everyone else. Plus, Katara is one of the most powerful Benders by the end of the series. There are validations to both arguments, which is why Katara remains such a divisive character.
Katara is a fourteen-year-old girl at the beginning of Avatar: The Last Airbender. She grew up in Wolf Cove of the Southern Water Tribe until she and her older brother, Sokka, decide to join Avatar Aang in his quest. Katara is the only Waterbender in the Southern Pole due to a handful of Fire Nation raids when she was younger. It was during one of these raids when her mother lied to save her and was killed in Katara’s place. Katara still holds her mother’s passing heavily in her heart.
