Thanks to the enormous success of the previous “Demon Slayer” films, the Japanese news platform Nippon.com already sees the possibility that the Franchise Studio Ghibli could soon replace the most important figurehead of the Japanese anime. We summarize the details below.
New anime?
The latest film of the »Demon Slayer« series is currently the measure of all things and after only 60 days since its publication with income over 33.06 billion yen (around 190 million euros), the second most successful film in Japan.
It is hardly surprising that numerous fans consider the moment to come to the “Demon Slayer” the long-standing dominance of Studio Ghibli as an unofficial “anime painting”-at least if you take the previous financial achievements as a yardstick.
After all, the 24 films of Studio Ghibli have so far attracted around 120 million cinema seeers and brought in income of around 168.7 billion yen (around 973 million euros) – a value that “Demon Slayer” could exceed with further success and with the outstanding films.
Commercial success
If you only look at the previous figures, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” has sold almost 29 million tickets and achieved an impressive earnings result of over 40 billion yen (around 230 million euros) – which is currently the most successful movie in Japanese history.
Immediately behind the first film of the three-part »Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle« series, which has had around 23 million viewers so far and-as mentioned at the beginning-is currently at a little more than 33 billion yen.
Together, the two films already have more than 52 million cinema seekers and revenue of over 73 billion yen (around 421 million euros).
Ghibli films still out of reach
Even if the overall results of the studio ghibli productions still seem out of reach, this could change soon: With two other planned “Demon Slayer” films for the “Infinity Castle Arc”, it is quite possible that the franchise will have the previous Ghibli records over the next few years.
However, in this discussion, the focus is primarily on the pure sales figures – mind you without inflation adjustment. However, if one looks at the cultural and emotional influence, the Ghibli films, which have shaped entire generations for decades, still have ahead.
In Germany, the first film of the »Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle« trilogy starts on September 18, 2025 with German and Japanese voice output in the cinema.
