Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is the 2024 remake of the beloved 2008 original series. Fans have long awaited another season of the classic anime, but a remake was hardly on anyone’s radar. Thankfully, the fans’ patience paid off with such a fantastic reboot. Holo the Wise Wolf is one of the most popular characters in anime history, but her story was never fully adapted into an anime format.
The 2024 remake refined what made the original series great with stunning visuals, fantastic characters, and the return of most of the original voice actors. While the 3D visuals aren’t the best in anime, they don’t detract from an otherwise phenomenal reboot that captured what made the original so special. Not to mention, the pacing of the story is just better, taking its time when it needs to, but never dragging.
The introductory episode of Spice and Wolf changed a few details from the original, but managed to stick the landing as far as character introductions go. Episode 1 of the series reintroduced old fans and new ones alike to Kraft Lawrence, a crafty merchant with a good eye for profit, and Holo the Wise Wolf, a playful and charming girl with ears that can tell when someone’s lying. The two first meet after the last bushel of wheat is harvested and Holo is forced to teleport to the wheat within Lawrence’s merchant cart. As a god of wheat and harvest, Holo has the ability to live within the wheat and teleport to the closest adjacent wheat within the vicinity.
